Why become a paid member of BAS Alumni?
Many of you are registering on the site without becoming a paid member of the BAS Association. You may be asking "what am I getting for the cost of a $50 lifetime membership?" As stated in our mission statement the association's major objective is to enhance and preserve the image, prestige and traditions of Brownsville Area Schools (BASD) to include BAHS, Brashear HS, Redstone HS and other schools in the Brownsville Area. Other objectives/goals include:
- Promote and support the annual BAS Distinguished Alumni Awards.
- Promote and support the BAS Annual luncheon in June.
- To fund the BASD scholarship program for deserving qualified seniors.
- To support the newly formed Brwonsville Area Education Foundation in enhancing the educational opportunities of Brownsville area students.
Another major objective is to have a centralized social network community for all BAS alumni at our newly developed website. Brownsville alumni are trying to connect with each other at various sites (Facebook, Classmates.com, AlumniClass.com, MySpace, etc) and our goal is to bring you all together right here at our site. With your membership and input, we will be able to effectively accomplish our endeavors that will benefit BASD, BAS Alumni and the Brownsville community.
So we urge you to "come on board" and become a member of the association and help us do great things for our school. The membership fees will assist us in accomplishing our goals/objective. Thanks!

Brownsville alumni group develops new website
By Ron Paglia
Sunday, May 23, 2010
They're not the new kids on the block by any means, but the Brownsville Area Schools Alumni Association has started a renewed effort to bring graduates together.
"We've been here for 10 years, but many graduates aren't aware of our existence and what we do, and are trying to do," said Kevin Fortuna, president of the association's board of directors. "Our organization represents an alliance of thousands of Brownsville Area graduates across the United States and worldwide. With a growing base of graduates, our mission is to cultivate stronger bonds with and among alumni and enable them to be involved in an interactive, customized experience ... become involved in school and class events." One of the major ways the association is doing this, Fortuna, a 1978 Brownsville graduate, said is with the new website: http://basalumni.org.
.Fortuna, a longtime educator currently serving as associate principal at Wilkinsburg High School and Middle School, said the enhanced website is designed to provide a conduit specifically for active participation in traditional class and multi-class reunions, meeting classmates and alumni, assisting in funding scholarships, and enhancing and preserving the traditions of the Brownsville Area School District. He also emphasized that the association is open to all alumni, staff, faculty and friends from Brownsville High School, Brashear High School, Redstone High School and Brownsville Area School District.
"The names of our schools may be different, but we share a long and distinguished heritage of pride in the excellence of education, athletics and other facets of school experiences," Fortuna said. "There are no geographic boundaries within our organization. BAS Alumni is open to everyone past and present." He lauded the current Brownsville Area School District administration for its "considerations and cooperation" and noted that students at Brownsville Area High School are actively involved with the group. "We're very grateful to the school district for their help," Fortuna said. "And we're pleased with the input of the current students; they provide great insight."
Dennis (Denny) Matteucci, a 1956 Brownsville High graduate who serves as executive director of the alumni group, offered similar sentiments. "It's important that we recognize the achievements of those who preceded us and the generations that follow, no matter where they went to school or where they lived," Matteucci said. "They are symbols of what can be accomplished and they serve as inspirations to our present students, incentives, if you will, to the idea that your dreams can come true."
Fortuna and Matteucci also called attention to the efforts of Lenora Byrd, Class of 1958, as administrator of the new website. "Just as she does with everything, Lenora has poured her heart and soul into the website," Matteucci said. "It's state-of-the-art with great information, news and links to even more of the same." Profiles of graduates also are featured and members can update their information by registering for a fee.
"So many graduates have their profiles posted on such sites as MySpace, Classmates, Alumniclass, Facebook and others, and they provide good biographies and contact information," Byrd said. "But the basic tenet of BASAlumni.org is to bring all of that to one central location for the convenience of everyone concerned."
NOTE: "Thanks Ron Paglia from California, PA who writes for the Tribune-Review , Herald Standard, and California Focus.". Ron has agreed to write featured articles on alumni members who have joined the association. I have created a special page for Ron's articles on the right sidebar.

Brownsville Area Education Foundation
The BAS Alumni Association is working in conjunction with this new organization and the board has agreed to provide them with funds to get started in their endeavors. We now have 2 professional organizations working towards doing something good and meaningful for the Brownsville Area School District.
The organizing members of the BAEF include: Front Row: Frank Ricco; Norma Ryan, secretary; James T. Davis, President.
Back row: Dr. L. Kirk Rohland, Carl DellaPenna, Dr. Phillip J. Savini Jr, and Kevin Fortuna (President of BAS Alumni Association).
Absent from photo are Herbert Mitchell, vice president, and William Jackson, treasurer.
On May 5, 2010 the Brownsville Area Education Foundation was officially formed. The organizing and charter members of the Foundation, all citizens interested in enhancing the educational opportunities of Brownsville Area students, worked along with representatives of the Community Foundation of Fayette County in order to form the Brownsville Area Education Foundation. The Foundations statement of purpose, according to the group, is "to raise funds, manage assets, distribute resources in support the Brownsville Education Foundation's mission of promoting a partnership of school personnel, students, families and communities to celebrate educational excellence by providing a nurturing and safe environment in which all students can acquire the knowledge and skills to become lifelong learners and positively contribute to a global society." Anyone interested may make a tax-deductible contribution to the Brownsville Area Education Foundation in care of the office of the Brownsville Area School District Superintendent at 1025 Lewis Street, Brownsville, PA 15417.

What is the BAS Alumni Association?
This association was formed by Kevin Fortuna and others in the year 2000, but many BAS alumni are unaware of its existence. As of this date, there are approximately 180 lifetime members who have paid their membership fees and have been receiving the hard copy of the Connections Newsletter. These members will be listed on this site when they register. The launching of this new website is part of the refocusing effort the BAS alumni association is taking to alert alumni of its existence and to reach out and connect with more Brownsville Area School District (BASD) classmates, faculty/staff, and the Brownsville community.
Most alumni are trying to connect with Brownsville classmates through the BASD website, Classmates.com, MySpace, Facebook, etc. This web site offers a centralized place strictly to reconnect with and communicate with those people from the Brownsville Area Schools and community.. The BAS alumni current Lifetime $50 membership fee is nominal compared to the annual fees one must pay for other alumni websites (the money goes to them and not to the Brownsville area).
BAS registered alumni will have access to all the features our website offers. By simply perusing our Home Page, you can see all the various features that are available to members. The membership fees and/or donations will be used to maintain this professional website provided by Alumni Channel, pay for hard copy Newsletter issues and mail distribution, internal expenditures, and future planned BASD scholarship funding.
We now have a place on the internet strictly for the Brownsville Area Schools, Jump on board and become a member NOW!

BIO: Personal Statement About You
New members are registering without completing your biography. Here's your chance to update everyone on what is happening in your life. Write something about yourself in the blank box of your profile area such as:
• Where did you live during HS?
• Who did you hang out with during HS?
• Where do you live now and what are you doing?
• What are your fondest memories of HS?
• What have you done since you left HS?
• Your military service info, if any.
• What are your hobbies?
• College / special training received
• Marital/family status info: spouse, kids, grand kids, pets, etc.
• Other comments you wish to make
We need your biography in your profile so Ron Paglia, columnist for local newspapers in the Browsville area, has references to contact and write short articles about our alumni for the web site. So many alumni have and are accomplishing some great things that the rest of us wish to hear about. So please take the time to tell us about yourself. Please post THEN and NOW photos in your profile or send photos to me and I will post them for you. We need photos for our Photo Gallery.
Thanks.

We are not affliated with Alumniclass.com!
This is to alert NEW MEMBERS that we are NOT theAlumniclass.com website which is linked to the Brownsville Area School District (BASD) website. This site has no official connection to Brownsville area schools and is a site similar to classmates.com which services all US states/schools. The annual payments on these sites do not have any official connection to BASD and they do not use their fees to support the school. I have no idea where this money goes to.
We are the OFFICIAL Brownsville Area Schools (BAS) alumni association with over 200 alumni members that has been in existence since 2000 and was formed by BHS classmates (most alumni do not know it even exists). The Association has reorganized with a new Board of Directors, new By Laws, etc. and launched our new web site for an online community this April to reach out to Brownsville Area Schools alumni who have joined these other nonofficial Brownsville alumni websites.
Payments to our site are Lifetime fees, rather than annual fees, and are used by us to support the alumni members with access to our website, a hard copy newsletter to older members who do not have a computer or access to the website, an annual luncheon in June, a Distinguished Alumni Award banquet in September and to support BASD with scholarships for Brownsville students; support the BASD new Foundation Program and maintain the tradition of BASD to name just a few goals. We hope to resolve this confusion soon!
